Content Moderator

Trust, Safety & Verification ยท Australia

Onsite Full-time From $75,000 + entitlements

Media.com is building a verified media network where identifiable people and Organizations publish directly at the source. Clear standards and fair enforcement are essential to maintaining the integrity of that network.

We are looking for a thoughtful, consistent and highly attentive Content Moderator to review content, profiles and user reports against Media.com’s rules and Publication Standards.

You will assess potentially sensitive and complex material, make proportionate enforcement decisions, document your reasoning and escalate urgent or higher-risk matters through established procedures.

The opportunity

This role sits within Media.com’s Trust, Safety & Verification team and contributes directly to the safety, integrity and credibility of the platform.

You may review Posts, Articles, Videos, Shorts, Responses, Releases, Official Statements, profiles, Newsrooms and related account activity. Reviews may be triggered by user reports, automated systems, internal referrals or scheduled quality checks.

Moderation determines whether content and conduct comply with Media.com’s standards. It does not represent an endorsement of the content and does not ordinarily involve independently verifying every factual claim.

What you’ll do

  • Review reported or flagged content, profiles and account activity against Media.com’s rules and Publication Standards.
  • Assess text, images, video, audio, links and supporting information.
  • Make consistent decisions to allow, label, restrict, remove or escalate material according to documented policies.
  • Identify potential harassment, threats, impersonation, privacy violations, manipulated media, hate, exploitation, fraud, spam and other prohibited conduct.
  • Recognize urgent safety matters and escalate them through the appropriate incident-response process.
  • Review potential misuse of Releases, Official Statements and Newsrooms without interfering with legitimate criticism, reporting or public-interest communication.
  • Record clear decision reasons and maintain complete, accurate case histories.
  • Communicate decisions and requests for further information in language that is clear, respectful and useful.
  • Preserve relevant information and evidence in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Support appeals by ensuring that the original decision and supporting record can be independently reviewed.
  • Meet quality and response-time expectations while giving complex cases the attention they require.
  • Participate in decision calibration, quality-assurance reviews and policy training.
  • Identify recurring patterns, coordinated misuse and emerging platform risks.
  • Escalate ambiguous, high-impact or legally sensitive cases to senior Trust and Safety, Legal or other designated teams.
  • Provide practical feedback to policy, product and engineering teams about unclear rules, workflow limitations and opportunities for safer product design.
  • Work with Support, Verification and Publishing Operations when a case crosses operational boundaries.
  • Help develop internal guidance, examples and decision resources as Media.com’s policies evolve.
  • Contribute accurate operational information to enforcement and transparency reporting where required.

What you’ll bring

  • Experience in content moderation, trust and safety, platform integrity, online investigations, editorial standards, complaints handling or a comparable field.
  • Strong judgment and the ability to apply written policies consistently.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Clear written communication and disciplined recordkeeping.
  • The ability to separate personal views from policy-based decisions.
  • An understanding of context, satire, quotation, public-interest discussion and other factors that can affect moderation decisions.
  • The ability to work carefully through ambiguous or incomplete information.
  • Confidence making decisions while recognizing when escalation is necessary.
  • Respect for confidentiality, privacy and access controls.
  • The ability to manage a changing queue of routine, complex and urgent cases.
  • A calm, professional approach when handling contentious material or communicating with affected users.
  • The ability to collaborate constructively and respond to quality feedback.

A university degree is not required. Relevant judgment, experience and demonstrated capability are more important.

Particularly valuable experience

  • Moderating content for a social network, publishing platform, marketplace or online community.
  • Applying policies concerning harassment, impersonation, privacy, manipulated media or coordinated abuse.
  • Reviewing news, public-interest, corporate or political content.
  • Working with case-management, moderation or investigation tools.
  • Supporting appeal, quality-assurance or policy-calibration processes.
  • Identifying patterns across connected accounts or coordinated activity.
  • Working across multiple countries, cultures or legal environments.
  • Proficiency in a language other than English.

Working with sensitive content

This role may involve exposure to distressing, offensive or otherwise sensitive material. Media.com will explain the nature of this exposure during the recruitment process and provide role-specific training, operational safeguards and wellbeing support.

Candidates should consider their personal suitability for sustained moderation work and are encouraged to ask questions about the working environment during the interview process.

What success looks like

During your first year, you will:

  • Make accurate and consistent decisions under Media.com’s standards.
  • Escalate urgent and complex matters promptly.
  • Produce clear records that support quality review and appeals.
  • Help reduce unnecessary friction for users whose content complies with the rules.
  • Identify recurring risks and contribute useful operational intelligence.
  • Participate constructively in calibration and policy-improvement work.
  • Help Media.com enforce its standards fairly, transparently and independently of commercial interests.

Why Media.com

  • Help shape trust and safety operations for a new verified media network.
  • Work on complex questions involving identity, publishing, public communication and online accountability.
  • Contribute to systems designed around clear sources and identifiable participation.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across policy, verification, product, publishing, legal and support.
  • Take meaningful ownership of work that directly affects users and the integrity of the platform.

Compensation

Base salary: from AU$75,000, plus entitlements.

The final package will reflect the successful candidate’s experience and capabilities. Applicable benefits and working arrangements will be explained during the recruitment process.
