Along with being Media.com's content moderator, I’ve been running a series of social reading events across Melbourne I'm calling Book Doofs.
The idea is simple: create an intimate, low-pressure environment where people can read together while listening to ambient music, and, if they feel like it, connect with others who love books just as much as they do, with (only) a little bit of small talk required at the end.
I’d been toying with the concept for years, but after seeing similar events succeed in New York, I decided to test the waters in Melbourne. In October/November, I ran a handful of trial events at Capers in Thornbury, and the response has been incredibly positive.
Here's why I am confident ideas like these work (and why I encourage you to do the same if you have an in-person idea that is similar)
- People are actively seeking in-person experiences that feel genuine, not transactional.
- Run clubs, communal dining nights and other low-pressure meetups are booming because they offer human connection without the intensity of traditional social settings.
- Coffee raves and sober nightlife events are on the rise, reflecting a shift in social habits that don't have to rely on alcohol to be sustainable.
- Social isolation is a growing challenge; small, welcoming gatherings genuinely help.
- Younger generations are investing in experiences over "things" and community-led events meet that need.
- Authenticity matters. When something is built with genuine intent, people feel it.
One thing I’m committed to: Book Doof will always be free. Reading is universal. It should be accessible, restorative and open to everyone.
The next Book Doof is happening at Nighthawks Bar in Collingwood. If you’re looking for a few hours of quiet escapism and community, come along and see if it’s for you.
