I’ve been following the investigations of Italian writer Francesca Bubba for a long time, and she had already raised the alarm about the dangers of this so-called “home birth influencer.” Now, after the tragic death of a baby during a two-day labour and the influencer’s arrest, the most shocking part is the reaction online. Italian social media is in turmoil, with many rushing to defend this person - not on the basis of any scientific evidence, but simply because she managed to build an online “community.” It’s fascinating (and disturbing) how becoming viral or famous is apparently enough to make people take someone seriously, even in the face of such serious consequences. And let’s be clear: Bibi is not the only one. There are plenty of influencers out there spreading the same dangerous rhetoric, and being treated as “authorities” simply because of their online visibility. This is not just a tragedy: it’s a public health risk when misinformation is allowed to go viral unchecked.
