No prescribed avenue for social media companies to check users’ ages, but options include facial estimation technology and matching photos with ID

From 10 December, new laws will apply to platforms that meet the government’s definition of an “age-restricted social media platform”

Australia has officially made history. The rest of the world is watching closely. As concerns around online safety, data privacy, and teen mental health grow, Australia’s bold move could set the tone for how social media is regulated globally in the years to come.

How they will do that is not prescribed, but it will be informed by the outcome of the age assurance technology trial, the full report of which is due in August.

I’m looking forward to the results of this age assurance technology trial.

The government has legislated that although ID checks can be one form of age assurance, it can’t be the only one accepted.

I really hope this marks the first step toward fully identity-verified social media.
