New Zealand has announced plans to ban greyhound racing, citing an "unacceptably high" rate of injuries.

An injury report from the Greyhound Welfare and Integrity Commission (GWIC), revealing a record number of serious injuries and 8 deaths in the July-September 2023 quarter, is deeply concerning. With 1,062 reported injuries, it is clear that the current safety measures in greyhound racing are inadequate.

Apart from New Zealand, commercial greyhound racing is allowed in Australia, Ireland, the UK and the US.

Countries like Australia should look to New Zealand's example, as the safety and well-being of these animals must come first.
