Netflix's $83B deal for Warner Bros shocked the entertainment world, and now we're all left wondering what this means for the global entertainment landscape. Here is what we know about the deal... 👉 Netflix are buying Warner Bros film and television studio as well as HBO & HBO Max. It not only expands the already #1 streaming service beyond all recognition and increases their offering tenfold, but it also brings them a massive step closer to finally winning Best Picture at the Oscars. 👉 It will come into play sometime after Q3 2026, which is when WBD moves its other assets (CNN, Food Network, TNT, Discovery+ etc) into a new company called Discovery Global. They're not part of the deal. 👉 What's scaring Hollywood is the concern over Netflix's approach to theatrical releases. Netflix are saying all the right things here, but the industry is anxious about Warner Bros films all now releasing on Netflix rather than in cinemas. Also, Warner Bros, as a studio, makes content for everyone. Will that continue? 👉 Their huge IP collection has just become unstoppable with the likes of The Wizard of Oz, DC Universe, Harry Potter, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Succession & The Wire joining Netflix. Expect many more spin-offs, new universes, reality competition versions and everything else. Netflix know how to work their IP. Ultimately, the streaming wars era will effectively be OVER. 💭 From an agent's point of view, the more places to work, the more people buying and selling content, the better. Having different options on the table is vital for our clients. This industry becoming a monopoly is not a good thing for anyone. With Sky potentially buying ITV, and Netflix now buying Warner Bros, there is a concern that opportunities will shrink even further. Right now, we're left with many more questions than answers. 🤔 Will this deal actually get done? There is a huge regulatory concern. Paramount are not giving up and will take it all the way to the White House. This could actually take years to come into play. 🤔 Will Netflix become EVEN more expensive for us to subscribe to? 🤔 HBO Max continues in the US and launches in the UK next year. Does it really make sense for Netflix to have 2 different platforms? Surely not. 🤔 Netflix, who are already #1 without this, have now blown all their competitors out of the water. Where does this leave Apple, Disney and Amazon? Netflix's only focus is taking on YouTube. 🤔 What will this mean for the future of cinema and the TV business? Or are we all just deluding ourselves as to what comes next? Netflix have surprised us recently with moves into live events, sports, podcasts and inserting ads... but who saw this coming? 🤔 What are your thoughts? ------- ✍ Subscribe to Dealmakers with Alex Segal on Substack, the industry-leading publication on talent management with 12K+ monthly views: https://lnkd.in/e3eY2uFf
