Social media platforms will not be able to rely on users to self-declare their ages under the incoming social media ban for children under 16, and will need to created layered approach to prevent minors from accessing their apps.

Will the social media platforms really be able to clean up their current users? Platforms are expected to detect and deactivate or remove existing underage accounts or face a hefty fine. Platforms are also banned from solely asking for government-issued ID to verify a teenagers age so the are relying on alternate methods which a report has said people with darker skin tones more likely to be incorrectly assessed by the technology.
