Years in the making. Community-based participatory methods. Two year-long grant cycles, with multiple months of deliberation and public relations on both ends and throughout. Multiple surveys. Multiple mailers. Multiple trips to the print shops. Multiple rounds of improvised public speaking. Two separate citizen working groups. Communicating to help people distinguish what is obligated by policy and what is up for discretion. Enduring the unexpected. I loved every minute of it.

Job postings have lived up to this promise to stop requiring college degrees.

However, dropping a requirement hasn't been translating to a change in hiring practices.

More and more every day, the web is like a dead mall. Giant footprint, resource intensive, underutilized, sucked the capital out of our city centers, seemed like a great idea at the time.

Unlike the dead mall, I actually need the web for information, social connection, income generation, safety and security systems, privileged access to my own data, and other social services that are now all inseparable from it. Quality information services are necessary for any functioning society, period.

Those of us who don't exploit this environment for personal gain have spent years looking for a better way. Some new platform apparatus that will help us cut the noise, and that does no harm. Where is it? Is it possible? If not, why not?

Why do people use social media platforms? Silly question. Or, it would be silly to claim an answer.

If I really want to know why people use social media, I'd better find and tell individual stories about how individual people really use social media. And I'd better resist the temptation of premature generalization.
