Tennessee Williams’ astonishing ability to capture the raw underbelly of human emotion is on full display in the celebrated West End production - A Streetcar Named Desire - now playing at Brooklyn Academy of Musics’ Strong Theater (BAM), NYC.&nbsp;&nbsp;At equal turns, keen audience will clearly see Williams’ own inner world and haunting turmoil on stage in the vulnerable insecurities of Blanche, in Stanley’s rage and near-bully despisement, in Stella’s acquiescence and escapement from family entanglements - and perhaps, most of all, in the dark passenger that trails throughout, never fully owning the stage, but unmistakably omnipresent.&nbsp;&nbsp;One can successfully argue that all of Williams’ work is autobiographical in nature in the presentation of post-industrial decay of lost worlds, the grappling with the myth and glow of memory, rumination of family dramas, and precise perception of mental illness. Williams’ understanding of the human condition has never been more on point than it is in this production of Streetcar - and perhaps, never more the baring of an artist’s soul and personal story.&nbsp;&nbsp;Similar to the way a runway fashion show is about showcasing clothes as art, this powerhouse cast of actors presents Williams’ words in raw reality, poignantly lyrical and heartbreaking at once. Yes, the play is still about the dark interplay between Blanche and brutalist, Stanley, but it’s really about the kind of trauma that is never resolved, cycled on repeat, until the poor inhabited soul is mercifully delivered into madness. &nbsp;&nbsp;The production is masterfully staged, seeming almost choreophraphed at times. The minimalist set hangs on the stage like the cheap red lantern Blanche insists on hanging over the single bulb that dims the dinghy two rooms she shares with Stanley and Stella. I have seen the film and read the script countless times - I have read all of Tennessee Williams’ plays - I saw the Blair Underwood version several years ago and CANNOT wait for this new performance at BAM.
