Misinformation Rules of Engagement
Our Purpose
At Media.com, we are committed to sharing accurate and reliable information, especially during critical times like global crises. Our goal is to prevent the spread of false or misleading information that could cause harm, especially to people affected by these situations.
What This Policy Covers
This policy applies to all content shared on Media.com, particularly during major crises such as wars, public health emergencies, natural disasters, or any event that threatens lives, safety, or basic needs.
What We Don’t Allow
We don’t allow the following types of misinformation on our platform:
- False Reporting in Crisis Situations: Sharing incorrect information about crisis events that may confuse or mislead users.
- Misleading Allegations: Fabricating or distorting facts about acts of violence, territorial conflicts, or atrocities against specific groups.
- Disinformation on Humanitarian Efforts: Spreading false information about international responses, such as humanitarian aid or sanctions.
- Harmful Crisis Narratives: Content that could lead to mass displacement or prevent aid organizations from helping those in need.
- Targeting Vulnerable Groups: Content encouraging surveillance, targeting, or attacks on groups based on their political, religious, ethnic, or racial backgrounds.
What Is Allowed
Some types of content are allowed even in a crisis:
- Commentary and Satire: Strong opinions or satire, as long as they don’t make false factual claims.
- Asking Questions: Legitimate inquiries about crisis events are allowed unless they contribute to a pattern of harmful misinformation.
- Fact-Checking: Content that corrects or debunks false information is encouraged.
- News Reporting: Accurate news reporting is allowed, even if some reports contain minor inaccuracies, as long as it’s not part of a pattern of misinformation.
- Personal Stories: First-hand accounts of crisis events are allowed, even if they can’t be verified, as long as they comply with other community standards.
What Happens If You Violate This Policy
- Content Restrictions: We may limit the visibility of content that violates this policy, especially for high-profile accounts.
- Warning Notices: Content that breaks the rules may be hidden behind a warning, and repeat violations can lead to account restrictions or even permanent bans.
- Content Removal: Our moderation team may proactively remove content that we find to be in breach of our policy.
How to Appeal
If you believe your content was wrongly flagged, you can appeal the decision, and we will review your case.
