Introduction

At Media.com, we are dedicated to fostering an environment where freedom of expression and open dialogue flourish. Recognising the diverse backgrounds and beliefs of our community, we are committed to ensuring that every user feels safe and respected. To this end, we strictly prohibit any form of hate speech that could lead to intimidation, exclusion, or potential offline violence.

Definition of Hate Speech

Hate speech on Media.com is defined as direct attacks against individuals or groups based on protected characteristics such as race, ethnicity, national origin, disability, religious affiliation, caste, sexual orientation, sex, gender identity, and serious disease. An attack is considered hate speech if it includes, but is not limited to:

  1. Violent or dehumanizing language.
  2. Harmful stereotypes or slurs.
  3. Statements promoting inferiority or contempt.
  4. Calls for exclusion or segregation based on protected characteristics, such as: race, ethnicity, color, national origin, immigration status, religion, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, medical conditions or veteran status.

Prohibited Behaviors and Content

  1. Violent and Dehumanising Conduct: Any content that includes threats, promotion, or advocacy of violence, dehumanizing speech, or imagery against individuals or groups based on protected characteristics.
  2. Harmful Stereotypes: Usage of stereotypes or comparisons that have historically been linked with discrimination or violence against specific groups. This includes equating individuals to insects, animals, or inanimate objects.
  3. Statements of Inferiority: Expressions implying that a protected group is inferior, including comments on physical, mental, or moral deficiencies.
  4. Expressions of Contempt and Disgust: Content expressing intense dislike or disdain towards individuals or groups based on their protected characteristics.
  5. Cursing and Derogatory Language: Use of profane or derogatory language targeting protected groups.
  6. Advocacy of Exclusion and Segregation: Content advocating for the exclusion or segregation of individuals based on protected characteristics.
  7. Slurs and Hate Speech Masquerading as Discussion: Even if presented as part of a discussion or for awareness, content containing slurs or hate speech may be removed if the intent is not clearly indicated or is ambiguous.

Exceptions and Contextual Considerations

Satirical Content: In specific instances where the content is clearly intended as satire and not meant to harm or demean, it may be allowed.

Condemnation and Awareness: When hate speech is shared in a manner that clearly condemns it or raises awareness against it, such content may be permissible.

Public Figures and Newsworthiness: While public figures are subject to criticism and discussion, they are still protected from severe attacks and hate speech. Content about public figures that crosses into hate speech will be subject to removal.

Reporting and Enforcement

We encourage users to report instances of hate speech for review. Media.com employs a combination of machine learning technology and human review to enforce this policy effectively.

Violations may result in content removal, temporary or permanent account suspension, and in severe cases, reporting to law enforcement.

Conclusion

Media.com stands firmly against hate speech in all its forms. Our commitment to these standards is unwavering as we strive to create a platform where diversity is celebrated, and every voice can be heard without fear of discrimination or harm.
